Bea second at county awards

City of Salisbury’s UK number one at 1200m on the track, Bea Wood, took second place in the Wiltshire Life magazine awards ceremony at Devizes.

She burst upon the Wiltshire sports scene after making an improbable switch in interests at school, from drama to middle distance running. In her early training sessions on the Five Rivers track, she soon showed outstanding ability and pace judgement.

Her first competitive outing for the club was in April last year at Oxford in the Young Athletes League at 1200m which she won – and she remained unbeaten at the distance. In her final league race of the season she reduced her best time and shattered the league record.

Moving on to her first big race, the 1500m in the Wiltshire Championships at Swindon, she showed great tactical awareness to win her first attempt at the distance. Bea then went on to represent Wiltshire and won the South West inter counties title for good measure in a club record time.

Bea’s true potential is likely to be at slightly longer distances in future: she took the course record at the 5k Salisbury park run, her time of 18min 10sec too good for most senior women – and men.

The category winner was Cadan Murley, also from Salisbury, a young rugby player who has already been capped for England.
